The product, in detail

Green kratom
Not a strain name. A vein colour.
Mitragyna speciosa is a tree in the coffee family. Ours comes off one organic farm in Uganda, and we sell the milled leaf in three vein colours; this is the green. No additives, no fillers, nothing blended into it.

The tree
A tree in the coffee family
Kratom is Mitragyna speciosa, and its best-known relative is coffee — both sit in the Rubiaceae. It is a tropical tree rather than a shrub or a herb, and it puts out large glossy leaves in opposite pairs along reddish woody stems. The leaves are the product. Nothing else of the tree is used.
It is native to Southeast Asia and has a long history of traditional and ceremonial use there and in Africa. This jar is not from Asia. We buy from one organic farm in Uganda, in East Africa, and import from them directly — African-grown kratom is uncommon, and it is the part of this jar that is hardest to find anywhere else.

The vein
Where the colour comes from
Green, red and white are not three plants and not three recipes. They name the colour of the midrib and leaf stalk running down the centre of the leaf, which is either pale, or green, or flushed a clear red-brown. Turn a leaf over and it is the first thing you see. The rest of the leaf looks the same whichever it is.
In the trade that colour is read as a rough record of the leaf's life — when in its growth it was picked, and what happened to it between the tree and the mill. One thing it is not is the colour of the powder: milled, this comes out sage-olive, and the colour in the name belongs to the vein.
Vein colour only gets you so far, though. Strain names in particular are heavily marketed. The differences between batches are real, but ninety-nine times in a hundred they come down to where the leaf grew, which subspecies it is, how it was grown and how it was dried — not to the name on the jar.
That is why there are three of these and not thirty. We used to carry Green Borneo, White Maeng Da, Bali Gold, Red Borneo, Red Vein Horn, Yellow Maeng Da, Green Maeng Da and Green Vein Kapuas. Now there is one farm and three veins: this green, a red and a white.

The powder
Wind dried, milled, and lab tested
The leaves are wind dried rather than dried under heat, then milled to a fine powder. What ends up in the jar is leaf and only leaf — we use no additives and no fillers, and nothing is blended in to bulk it out.
Every batch is lab tested before it is sold: salmonella, E. coli, heavy metals and other foreign contaminants. That is the half of a bulk plant powder you cannot see and cannot taste, and it is the reason it matters which farm a jar came off.
A dose is stirred into a small amount of warm water or into a smoothie, drunk, and chased with something that tastes better — it is bitter. We suggest 30 to 60 minutes before food, and set our guideline at 1–2g mild, 3–4g moderate, 5–8g strong.
Use it sparingly. That is our own advice, and we would rather give it here than in small print at the foot of a label. We would also rather you came to this leaf after other plants than before them.

Grown organically on one farm in Uganda and imported directly. No additives, no fillers, no blend. Packed in glass rather than plastic — we would rather the jar were reused or returned than recycled, because melting glass down costs far more energy than washing it.
Before you start
A note on informed use
Plant medicine deserves preparation. For most people this is gentle and uneventful, but some situations call for a conversation first.
Talk to someone first if:
- You take prescription medication of any kind
- You or your family have a history of psychosis, schizophrenia or bipolar disorder
- You have a heart condition or blood pressure that isn't well controlled
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You simply aren't sure whether this is for you
SSRIs and other antidepressants
They compete for the same serotonin receptors, and can dull the effect substantially. People who feel nothing at all are often taking one without having made the connection. It doesn't rule anything out; it does mean the timing is worth discussing with your doctor first.
