Pine trees are defined by their clusters of needles, called fascicles, with an attached pine cone.

There is little that sparks intrigue as much as staring into an expansive Pine forest, seeing rows and rows of these custodians. Known for their extensive forests, the fascinating thing about this tree is that all parts of the tree are known in different ways for their medicinal, health benefits and practical use – the needles, pollen and bark used for medicine, wood and cones for their practical reasons and the nuts used in cuisine.

The medicinal use of Pine (Pinus spp) dates back to the Middle Ages and has also been used in Native American healing traditions who taught early settlers how to use various parts of the tree such as the bark, sap, pollen and needles.

The research on Pine needles was initiated to understand just how these trees could remain evergreen and thrive in such harsh climates. Research showed that specific combinations of compounds were responsible for supporting the tree’s resilience and that when applied medicinally to humans, and as a result our capacity for such resilience improved.

There are on-going trials aiming to show the benefits of Pine needle including the treatment of gastrointestinal tract disorders; prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative disease; regulation of lipid metabolism; immune system regulation; treatment of viral, bacterial and fungal infections; treatment of certain cancers; treatment of respiratory illnesses; and heavy metal detoxification.

The synergistic effect of using the whole herb is beneficial as the various constituents contribute to the multiple benefits that Pine needles have within the body. Such as the high vitamin C and A content. However, the extracted form is also highly beneficial due to the fact that when extracted certain constituents such as alpha or beta pinene are more readily available and are natural decongestants, gastro-protective, anti-inflammatory, anti-coagulant, analgesic, antibacterial, antiviral and anxiolytic in nature.

Some of our favourite healing capabilities includes being able to modulate the immune system modulation and anti-inflammatory, protective for the gut, antiviral, antibacterial, anti-fungal, aiding in detoxification, it supports the respiratory tract and neurological health.
