Suggested use

One ball, once every second day. (1 day break in between) When: In the morning, either on an empty or full stomach. Please note that these are medicines and not just food, and should be treated with respect. If you are considering mixing them with "other medicines, " please consult with someone that you trust. Alternatively, you may contact us, and we can advise you further.

Three dark rough-surfaced balls on a shallow cream stoneware plate, the front one split open, set on a cream linen cloth drawn across a pale timber table; an empty stoneware cup and a low dish of cacao nibs stand behind, a dried sprig casting its shadow at the right, in hard raking daylight.

Magic Balls

Cacao, dates, and a weighed mushroom

A raw bliss ball — dates and raisins bound with macadamia and cashew, worked through with cacao powder and studded with nibs — carrying 100mg or 200mg of mushroom microdose. One, on alternate mornings.

Seen from above on pale weathered timber: a dish heaped with dark cacao powder and a bowl of glossy whole dates at the top, round pale macadamias and curled cashews spread below them, a scatter of dark raisins, a heap of cracked cacao nibs, coarse white salt on a folded linen cloth at the lower left, and one finished dark studded ball at the lower right.

The ball

Dried fruit, nuts and raw cacao

A bliss ball is a pantry confection rather than a baked thing: dried fruit and nuts worked to a paste and rolled into a sphere, held together by the fruit itself. This one is built on dates and raisins with macadamia and cashew nuts through it, which is where the pale flecks in a broken one come from.

Raw cacao appears twice on the list, as powder and as nibs. They are the same bean in two states — one milled to a fine dark dust that goes through the mix, one cracked into pieces that stay whole, which is why the outside is rough rather than smooth. Vanilla powder, a little peppermint oil and Oryx Desert Salt finish it.

Everything in it is organic except the nuts and the mushroom. It contains tree nuts — macadamia and cashew both.

One whole studded ball and two halves of another on a speckled grey ceramic plate, the cut faces showing dense dark paste flecked with pale nut, a small shallow dish holding a scant pinch of fine pale powder behind them, linen bunched around the plate on dark timber.

The dose

100mg, or 200mg

One line of the recipe carries a weight, and it is the mushroom: 100mg in one ball, 200mg in the other. That is the entire difference between the two — same dates, same nuts, same cacao, one figure changed.

Microdose describes the size of the dose rather than the mushroom. It is an amount meant to sit inside an ordinary day rather than to set one aside.

A worn timber kitchen table: a hand entering from the left lifting one dark studded ball above a shallow cream plate holding three more, a stoneware mug of tea beside it, a clothbound notebook on a folded linen napkin at the right, dried flower heads on the wood at the lower left, and a tabby cat sitting on a spindle-back chair in the shadow behind.

How it's taken

One, then a day without

One ball, once every second day, with a day's break in between. Bliss Balls ask for it in the morning, and are relaxed about whether you have eaten first.

It is chewed, and that is the practical difference between this and a capsule. It goes down the way food does, at the speed food does, and it tastes of chocolate, peppermint and salt on the way.

Bliss Balls ask that these be treated with respect rather than as a snack, and that anyone already taking other medication speak to someone they trust — or to us — before combining them.

100mg ball

One ball · 100mg mushroom microdose

The lighter of the two, and the one to meet the ball on.

200mg ball

One ball · 200mg mushroom microdose

Twice the dose in the same ball. Worth knowing how 100mg sits first.

Dosing

Finding a rhythm you can keep

One ball, once every second day, with a day's break in between, taken in the morning. That is the whole of the Bliss Balls schedule.

One on, one off

A ball on the dose day, then a day without it. Morning, on an empty stomach or a full one.

14 dose days in four weeks on the Every second day schedule — one on, one off, repeating. Most people run a schedule for about six weeks before taking a longer break.

Before you start

A note on informed use

Plant medicine deserves preparation. For most people this is gentle and uneventful, but some situations call for a conversation first.

Talk to someone first if:

  • You take prescription medication of any kind
  • You or your family have a history of psychosis, schizophrenia or bipolar disorder
  • You have a heart condition or blood pressure that isn't well controlled
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You simply aren't sure whether this is for you

SSRIs and other antidepressants

They compete for the same serotonin receptors, and can dull the effect substantially. People who feel nothing at all are often taking one without having made the connection. It doesn't rule anything out; it does mean the timing is worth discussing with your doctor first.
