A raw cacao ball from a kitchen in Noordhoek — dates and raisins bound with macadamia and cashew, crusted in cracked nib — carrying organic Sceletium extract and a little rose geranium. Sold singly, or thirty at a time.
The ball
Dried fruit, nuts and cracked nib
Dates and raisins worked to a paste with macadamia and cashew through them, raw cacao powder into the mix, and vanilla powder and Oryx Desert Salt to finish. Nothing is baked — the fruit is what holds it together.
The crust is the part you notice first. It is rolled through cracked raw cacao nib and coarse nut, so the outside is knobbly and two-toned — dark beneath, caramel on the raised pieces — and a broken one shows dense dark date paste with pale cream nut fragments through it. Nib and powder are the same bean in two states, one milled fine and one cracked into pieces that stay whole.
The label sets out the rest of it: organic, raw, vegan, gluten-free, no added sugar. Everything on the ingredients list is marked organic except the macadamia and cashew nuts. Those nuts are also the declared allergen, and the pack adds that it may contain fragments of fruit stones — dates and raisins arrive with stones, and not every fragment comes out.
The botanicals
Kanna, and a little rose geranium
Sceletium tortuosum is a low sprawling succulent of southern Africa's dry interior — plump finger-shaped leaves on short woody stems, flowering white in many fine strap-like petals. Kanna is one of its names, and the Khoikhoi worked with it for hundreds of years. Our two Sceletium products carry the longer version of that story.
What is in this ball is the extract rather than the leaf, which matters: an extract is a concentrate, and a pinch of one is not the same quantity of plant as a pinch of the other. The pack calls it a Sceletium Cacao ball.
The second botanical is rose geranium — Pelargonium graveolens, a southern African pelargonium with soft crinkled deeply-lobed leaves and small pale pink flowers. Its leaves are distilled for a scent that smells of rose rather than of geranium, which is where the name comes from and what it is doing here: it is the ball's perfume, against the cacao and the salt.
The packet
A paper packet, and a jar to move it to
It arrives loose in a small paper packet — zero-waste, the way Bliss Balls put it, and the pack prints that it is plastic-free and biodegradable. Their one instruction is to move the balls into a jar or a resealable bag when they arrive, because a paper packet does not keep a raw date paste fresh for long. They are made by Blissfoods in Noordhoek and the pack says so, along with a note that a percentage goes to youth at risk.
The printed nutritional panel is written per 15g serving: 350.5 kilojoules, 1.6g protein, 7.7g glycaemic carbohydrate, 3.4g fat and 2.1g dietary fibre. That is a serving rather than a ball, and the balls are sold singly.
There is no dosing note on this product at all — no quantity, no frequency, no time of day. Bliss Balls have not written one, and we are not going to write one for them.

Plant medicine deserves preparation. For most people this is gentle and uneventful, but some situations call for a conversation first.

SSRIs and other antidepressants
They compete for the same serotonin receptors, and can dull the effect substantially. People who feel nothing at all are often taking one without having made the connection. It doesn't rule anything out; it does mean the timing is worth discussing with your doctor first.
