Canna Salve
Four butters, a wax, and a cannabinoid infusion
A stiff ivory balm in a small glass jar. Coconut oil carries a full-spectrum cannabinoid infusion; a palm wax and four plant butters set it. It goes on the skin rather than under the tongue, and Canna Heal say it is not psychoactive.
The base
What a salve actually is
A salve is a fat with something dissolved in it, stiffened until it holds its shape. There is no water in it and nothing to emulsify, which is why it comes in a screw-top jar rather than a pump, and why a fingerful is firm in the tin and soft the moment it is on skin.
The fat is organic virgin coconut oil, the first line of Canna Heal's list. Behind it come four butters: cacao, pressed from the cocoa bean; shea, from the nut of the West African shea tree; mafura, from the seeds of the Natal mahogany; and mango, from the stone. A butter is only a fat that is solid at room temperature, and each of these four is a little harder or softer than the next — between them they set how the thing feels.
One wax holds it together. The list names carnauba, which comes off the leaves of a Brazilian palm and is among the hardest waxes there is, so a little of it goes a long way. That it is carnauba and not beeswax is the whole of the vegan claim on the lid — the wax is where a plant balm usually stops being one.
Then neem oil and argan, and four aromatics to finish: lavender, geranium, eucalyptus and rosehip. Rosehip is a pressed seed oil rather than a distilled essential one, but Canna Heal group it with them.
The infusion
The extract goes into the oil
The cannabis part of this is not a measured drop of concentrate stirred into a finished cream. The maker's own phrase is a full spectrum plant infusion into coconut oil base — plant into fat, the fat takes up what will dissolve in it, and the spent matter is strained out. It is the oldest way of getting a plant into a topical, and it is why coconut oil is both the base and the solvent here rather than just the bulk.
Full spectrum means the extract has not been isolated down to a single compound: whatever crossed from the plant into the oil is still in there together.
Two strengths are made. This is the standard; the extra strength uses a more potent extract and adds a solvent called DMSO. Canna Heal publish a cannabinoids-per-millilitre figure for each jar, and the two cannot both be right.
Where it goes
Rubbed in, where you want it
Nothing about this one is swallowed, and the whole of Canna Heal's method is one line: rubbed in where it's needed. The balm is firm in the jar, a finger's warmth softens it, and it spreads from there.
Their own answer to the question is that the cannabinoids are taken up by the skin before they reach the bloodstream, which is where a psychoactive effect would have to begin — so, they say, it can be applied liberally.
Two cautions, both theirs: keep it away from the eyes, and be careful applying it over an open wound. They also offer it as a massage balm.
How much, how often and for how long are published nowhere: no amount, no frequency, no course. A jar of butter and hard wax will soften in a warm room.

A note on informed use
Plant medicine deserves preparation. For most people this is gentle and uneventful, but some situations call for a conversation first.

SSRIs and other antidepressants
They compete for the same serotonin receptors, and can dull the effect substantially. People who feel nothing at all are often taking one without having made the connection. It doesn't rule anything out; it does mean the timing is worth discussing with your doctor first.
